5 Tips for Protecting Your Roof

The roof is one of the most important parts of any home. It takes the brunt of any storm or bad weather that comes through, keeping everyone inside safe. Roofs also play an important role in regulating the temperature within a home, with better-maintained roofs contributing to lower energy costs. This is why it's essential that you take good care of your home's roof.

To do this, here are five ways that you can protect the roof of your home.

1. Clean Your Gutters

Over time, all of your gutters can become clogged with leaves, twigs, and other debris. If too much debris builds up inside the gutters, it will cause water flow problems. Then, instead of the gutter properly draining water safely away from the home, the water will spill over onto the roof. The result is damage to your roof, with leaks likely finding their way inside.

To prevent this, you should clean out your gutters every few weeks and especially before a big storm is about to arrive. If you don't feel comfortable getting up on a ladder, call a professional gutter cleaning service and have them do it for you.

2. Trim Back the Branches

Next, look for any branches hanging over your roof. It's a good idea to occasionally have these trimmed back, as they can cause problems. For example, if a large branch breaks off during a storm and lands on the roof, it could easily cause damage. You should trim back the branches whenever they get too big or long to protect not only your roof but also your windows and power lines.

3. Look for Dead Trees

While you're looking for branches to trim back, examine all the trees in your yard. If you notice that any of the taller trees are dead, you should have them cut down. Dead trees are more likely to split and fall over, and if you're unlucky, this could be directly onto your home.

Dead trees have a few traits to help you spot them. Look for leaves that are discolored from other similar trees around them, cracks or holes within the bark, or branches where nothing is growing. If you go to snap a branch and it breaks easily, this is a typical sign of a dead tree.

4. Clear Off the Roof

Just like leaves and debris can build up inside your gutters, it can also get stuck on your roof. If you have leaves sitting on your roof for too long, they will gather moisture, which will then seep into your roof. The result could be a roof that starts to decompose, or you could even get weeds sprouting on your roof.

To address this, you may need to clear off your roof from time to time. A roof rake can help you do this, or you can work with a professional roof maintenance service.

5. Address Leaks Early

If you spot a leak coming into your home, you'll want to address it as quickly as you can. A leak that is left unaddressed will not only cause damage inside your home but also continue to get worse along the roof. Look for signs of water within the ceiling directly underneath your roof. If you have an attic in your home, check it regularly for signs of a leak.
