What the forecast says
A strong El Niño is likely. Heavy rain here is not a promise.
On October 8, 2026, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center said a strong-to-very strong El Niño is likely through January to March 2027, with better than an 83% chance. It gave an 83% chance that October through December will be stronger than any El Niño since 1950.
That is a forecast of the ocean, not of rain over Merced or Stanislaus County. NOAA says El Niño-type impacts are more likely with an event this size, though not guaranteed. A sound roof handles a wet winter or a dry one. A tired roof is a gamble either way, and the time to find out which one you have is before the first storm.

Repair or replace before the rains?
When a repair is enough
If the trouble is in one place and the rest of the roof is in good shape, a repair is usually the right call: a few missing or lifted shingles, a cracked pipe boot, loose flashing at a chimney or wall, or a single leak with a clear source. Fix it before the rain starts and the roof keeps doing its job.
When replacement makes more sense
Replacement is worth pricing when the problems are spread across the roof: shingles curling or cracking on several slopes, heavy granule loss in the gutters, more than one leak, soft spots in the decking, or a roof that is still the original on a house built before 2010. Patching a roof like that buys a season, not a winter.
How the estimate settles it
The free estimate gives you a written price for the work your roof actually needs. If it’s a repair, the estimate says so. If it’s a replacement and you sign by November 30, 2026, the $500 credit applies. More on the trade-offs: roof repair vs. replacement.

Owens Corning Platinum Preferred
Owens Corning’s Platinum Protection Limited Lifetime Warranty requires the roof to be installed by a Platinum Preferred contractor. Its workmanship coverage runs the first 25 years without proration, and it includes tear-off and disposal when they are needed for the repair. GAF Master Elite
GAF offers its Golden Pledge Limited Warranty only through Master Elite contractors. It covers qualifying GAF products for 50 years without proration, plus up to 30 years of misapplication (workmanship) coverage, the part only a Master Elite contractor can offer. Which warranty would my roof get?
That depends on the shingle line and components on your roof, and each manufacturer has its own registration rules. Your written estimate names the warranty your replacement qualifies for.

What can I check myself before the rains?
From the ground, not the roof: missing or curled shingles, granules piling up in gutters or at downspouts, gutters full of leaves, and stains on ceilings or around skylights. Clear the gutters and downspouts before the first storm. Our winter storm prep checklist goes through it step by step.
