The roof is one of the most important parts of any home. It takes the brunt of any storm or bad weather that comes through, keeping everyone inside safe. Roofs also play an key role in regulating the heat within a home, with better-kept roofs contributing to lower energy costs. This is why it's important that you take good care of your home's roof.

To do this, here are five ways that you can protect the roof of your home.

1. Clean Your Gutters

Over time, all of your gutters can become clogged with leaves, twigs, and other debris. If too much debris builds up inside the gutters, it will cause water flow problems. Then, instead of the gutter properly draining water safely away from the home, the water will spill over onto the roof. The result is damage to your roof, with leaks likely finding their way inside.

To prevent this, you should clean out your gutters every few weeks and especially before a big storm is about to arrive. If you don't feel comfortable getting up on a ladder, call an expert gutter cleaning service and have them do it for you.

2. Trim Back the Branches

Next, look for any branches hanging over your roof. It's a good idea to sometimes have these trimmed back, as they can cause problems. For example, if a large branch breaks off during a storm and lands on the roof, it could easily cause damage. You should trim back the branches whenever they get too big or long to protect not only your roof but also your windows and power lines.

3. Look for Dead Trees

While you're looking for branches to trim back, examine all the trees in your yard. If you notice that any of the taller trees are dead, you should have them cut down. Dead trees are more likely to split and fall over, and if you're unlucky, this could be directly onto your home.

Dead trees have a few traits to help you spot them. Look for leaves that are discolored from other similar trees around them, cracks or holes within the bark, or branches where nothing is growing. If you go to snap a branch. it breaks easily, this is a typical sign of a dead tree.

4. Clear Off the Roof

Just like leaves and debris can build up inside your gutters, it can also get stuck on your roof. If you have leaves sitting on your roof for too long, they will gather water, which will then seep into your roof. The result could be a roof that starts to decompose, or you could even get weeds sprouting on your roof.

To address this, you may need to clear off your roof from time to time. A roof rake can help you do this, or you can work with an expert roof maintenance service.

5. Address Leaks Early

If you spot a leak coming into your home, you'll want to address it as quickly as you can. A leak that is left unaddressed will not only cause damage inside your home but also continue to get worse along the roof. Look for signs of water within the ceiling directly underneath your roof. If you have an attic in your home, check it regularly for signs of a leak.

With a few preventative steps. some basic maintenance, you can keep your roof in great shape for a long time to come. But when you need some roof repairs, contact Econo Roofing. Our team has years of know-how keeping and repairing roofs, and we'd be happy to help you out in any way that we can.

FAQ

Common questions on this topic

How do I protect my roof from heat damage?

Protect your roof from heat with five steps. One: install Title 24 cool-rated shingles or metal. Two: ensure proper attic ventilation with ridge and soffit vents. Three: add radiant barrier insulation. Four: keep gutters clean to prevent moisture pooling. Five: schedule annual inspections to catch heat-cracked flashing early.

What is a cool roof in California?

A cool roof in California meets Title 24 reflective standards — Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of 16+ for steep-slope roofs and 75+ for low-slope. Cool roofs reflect far more sunlight than dark shingles — the U.S. Department of Energy notes a reflective roof can stay more than 50°F cooler on a sunny afternoon — keeping your attic cooler and cutting AC load. Required for all Central Valley re-roofs.

How can I extend my roof's lifespan?

Extend your roof's lifespan by inspecting twice yearly, cleaning gutters every 6 months, trimming overhanging tree branches, ensuring proper attic ventilation, and addressing minor repairs before they spread. A well-maintained asphalt roof lasts 30 years instead of 20. Econo Roofing offers annual maintenance plans starting at $295.
